The Munro Portable Skid Resistance Tester is an internationally accepted test method for skid resistance measurement on all surfaces where people or vehicles may slip or skid.
This outstanding contribution to road safety is the result of over 10 years' intensive development by the Road Research Laboratory of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research - a British Government organisation concerned with studying problems that arise in designing, building, maintaining and using public highways.
The instrument, which is direct reading, gives a measure of the friction between a skidding tyre and wet road surface. It provides the Highway Engineer with a practical means of obtaining reliable scientific evidence on which to take appropriate measures to reduce skidding.
To ensure consistency and maintenance of standard all instruments are submitted to the British Standards Institute for calibration and approval before supply to customers, for which a separate fee is charged.
For applications in pedestrian areas and indoor environments where slipping may be a hazard, the Skid Tester is used with a FourS (Standard Simulated Shoe Sole) rubber slider.Measurement of slip resistance using the pendulum skid tester is the recommended method described in ISO and EN standards for highways, pavements, sports venues, business premises and other locations.

Studies of accident sites have revealed that the polishing of roadstone is a major factor in skidding. An important application of the Tester is in the laboratory determination of the resistance of the roadstone to polishing.
