Shattered Lives
Every year lives are shattered by accidents resulting from slips, trips and falls in the workplace – more than 1,000 workers a month suffer serious injury in this way. These can occur in both internal and external environments where there may be potential hazards that can cause slips, trips or falls.

Members of the workforce affected by injuries include:  construction workers, building labourers, trades people, kitchen employees, shop workers and office staff.

In 2008/09 over 10,000 employees suffered a major injury as a result of a slip or trip at work. The cost to individuals who have suffered accidents in the workplace can be immense - pain from injury, loss of income, worry and stress.

For employers  - accidents in the workplace can bring hidden costs:  equipment damage, production delays, loss of expertise, investigation time, litigation, fines and damage to company reputation. Every year employers pay out over £500m in costs directly related to workplace accidents.

The cost to society including the cost of health services, loss of output and social security payments is over £800m per year.

Testing floor surfaces with the Munro Pendulum Skid Tester
Originally designed to replicate the actions of a slipping foot, the pendulum skid tester is an internationally accepted test method for skid resistance measurement on all surfaces where people or vehicles may slip or skid.  Subsequently adopted for the testing of road surfaces the pendulum slip tester is considered the best method of pedestrian slip testing.

‘The Pendulum Method’ is the only slip test method endorsed by the HSE and is used extensively in legal proceedings and for forensic investigations. Pendulum testing provides strong evidence that statutory obligations have, or have not, been fulfilled.

Munro Instruments have continually refined and improved the original design of the pendulum skid tester since production began in the 1960’s. Now recognised as a leading contributor to health and safety in the workplace the tester is manufactured at their factory in Essex and distributed to clients throughout the world.

(Grip Potential carry out independent pendulum slip testing and risk assessments. They employ a variety of methods, including BS 7976 "The Pendulum Method", surface roughness (Rz) measurement and risk assessment in line with the HSE's "Slips Potential Model").
